1 - Toy for babies
The sound of the chimes is most wonderful for children. But for security reasons they should be kept out of reach of children under three years old
2 - Maintenance ?
Used indoors the Koshis will not need any maintenance and should last a very long time.
3 - Outdoors ?
If used outdoors, the Koshi chimes should be protected from rain underneath an overhang. In damp weather, especially in coastal areas, it's best to take them indoors. Like all wooden objects outdoors, and specially bamboo, they should be regularly treated with a protective oil like clear teak oil, tung oil or wood oil. If black spots are seen on the bamboo, treat them with a paste of sodium bicarbonate with a little water and wipe it off once dried. After that treat with oil. Possible corrosion forming on the metal instrument will not affect the musical quality.
4 - About 4 elements
The element / melody relation came to me by intuition and is not based on any scientific or metaphysical discipline.
5 - About the name Koshi
Koshi is a name that I created by playing with sounds of vowels and consonants. It had no other intention. Later I found it has several meanings in languages like Japanese, Nepalese and Hindi. In Japanese, I heard, it can mean "ancient poetry", which I think is a nice association with the sound of the chimes.
